Wiltshire Council has approved plans for the expansion of Whyr Farm in Potterne, despite more than 2,000 people rallying to oppose the development. We are deeply disappointed by this decision.

More Than 2,000 People Took Action

Together, we mobilised an incredible response. More than 2,000 objections were submitted, with local residents and supporters from across the country raising serious concerns in an effort to persuade the council to reject the application. 

To every single person who took action, thank you. Your voice helped demonstrate the growing public opposition to factory farming and sent a clear message that communities do not want to see farming continue to expand unchecked. Despite this overwhelming public response, the council ignored the objections. 

The development includes a new agricultural building covering more than 2,000 square metres, allowing Whyr Farm to significantly expand its intensive ‘beef’ operation. Hundreds more cows will now be kept within an increasingly industrial farming system.

The Fight Continues

This decision is a setback, but it does not change what we know. Public concern about factory farming is growing, and communities are increasingly unwilling to accept the expansion of animal farming without scrutiny. More than 2,000 objections is a powerful statement. It shows that people care about protecting animals, safeguarding the environment, and preserving rural landscapes. 

We will continue to monitor developments at Whyr Farm, challenge the expansion of animal farming wherever it appears, and campaign for change. Despite the loss, this action has shown something encouraging. Thousands of people are prepared to stand up for animals and demand a better food system. Our movement is only growing.
