It's happened! A trial making oat the default has taken place at The Canteen in Bristol – the first café to join our campaign. This is a big step forward as it shows that cafés are ready to rethink their menus, and it's happening because of people like you. We're just getting started, and we'll be building on this momentum in the months ahead.
The Canteen say:
“We have done a lot of work in recent years on our carbon footprint literacy and have recognised the impact that dairy and eggs have on our overall footprint. Reducing dairy has by far the biggest impact we can make—not just environmentally, but for animal welfare. We’re keen to see how customers respond to oat milk being the default and hope this shows that a wider shift is possible through small changes.”
This marks the first trial as part of our Udderly Kind campaign, but it’s only the beginning. What’s happening at The Canteen shows that change isn’t just possible, it’s already happening. One café shifting its default can open the door for many more to follow, and we see this as a clear signal that momentum is building.

We visited The Canteen in person on their launch day. We spoke to staff and customers and tried their delicious plant-based offerings. The launch day was a resounding success, but don’t just take our word for it. Watch our video and find out more. Will you share it on your social media to help us reach more people with the exciting news?
What if one simple change could transform the way cafés serve coffee? By making oat milk the default, cafés have an opportunity to reshape habits, spark conversations, and take a meaningful step toward a more sustainable future. It’s not about removing choice, it’s about redefining the starting point.
This trial is an open invitation to cafés across the UK: lead, experiment, and inspire. Every café has its own motivation. For some, it’s about sustainability. For others, it’s responding to growing customer demand or standing out as a forward-thinking business. Whatever drives you, this is your moment to be part of something bigger.
To make this transition as easy as possible, we’ve partnered with Minor Figures to support participating cafés.

Those taking part in the trial will receive:
This isn’t just a trial, it’s a chance to showcase leadership and creativity in your coffee offering. Together, lets make oat the new normal.
As always,
For the Animals!
