Today marks World Milk Day, a day used to celebrate the dairy industry and to raise support for it. But for us, it’s a moment to remember the countless cows whose lives are shaped by suffering, separation, and loss within the system.
To bring visibility to this reality, we partnered with sand artist Fred Brown to create a striking sand installation on the beach in Scarborough. Set against the coastline, the artwork served as a powerful tribute to the calves who lost their lives and the mothers who never got to keep their babies. On World Milk Day, we’re asking the public to remember that dairy kills and to choose oat.

In 2025 alone, according to official government data, 20,151 calves under one month old were killed in GB abattoirs after being separated from their mothers so that humans could consume the milk intended for them. Behind every carton of cow’s milk and coffee made with dairy is a story rarely told, one of mothers and babies torn apart.
The installation invited people to stop, reflect, and consider the hidden cost of dairy production. While milk is marketed as wholesome and natural, the industry depends on repeated cycles of impregnation, birth, and separation. Calves are removed shortly after birth so that the milk produced by their mothers can be sold for human consumption. The installation forms part of our wider campaign to challenge perceptions of dairy, and bring the reality to the public.

My views align with those of Animal Justice Project - I’d very much like to see an end to animal exploitation. It was my pleasure helping amplify their message.

Every latte, cappuccino, or cup of tea made with cow’s milk has a story behind it, and that story begins with loss. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Through this artwork, we wanted to create a moment of remembrance and encourage compassionate choices. Plant-based alternatives are more accessible than ever, and choosing oat milk is one simple way people can help reduce demand for animal suffering.
On World Milk Day, we remember the lives lost at the hands of the dairy industry and urge the nation to choose oat milk instead.
As always,
For the animals.
