Thanks to the relentless advocacy of our supporters and our uncompromising hard-hitting exposés, the pig industry is facing one of its biggest shake-ups in decades. After we exposed horrific abuse at Cranswick’s Northmoor Farm earlier this year, the company was forced to launch an Independent Review. Today, the results are in – a veterinarian has identified 44 major issues that Cranswick must address.
The report lays bare the atrocities that the industry tries to cover up: pigs beaten with paddles, nose rings forced into the noses of outdoor sows, mothers trapped in farrowing crates, and widespread antibiotic use. These issues are not only systemic within Cranswick farms, but the entire industry.
After our series of powerful and shocking investigations at Northmoor Farm, Somerby Top and Mere Farm, key abusive issues may finally be wiped out. While our ultimate goal remains to completely abolish pig farming, our investigations have generated powerful momentum, driving what could become the most transformative changes to an animal industry in recent years, and ultimately, reduce Cranswick’s profit margins.
Dr Andy Butterworth, who undertook the review, stated “there is much that can be done to improve welfare standards across Cranswick operations, and across the pig farming industry,” sending a clear message to those who exploit pigs – you are not untouchable. You will be held accountable, and when campaigners come together, big changes happen. And to be clear – we will not be stopping here. This only drives us to fight harder to push companies like Cranswick into decline, and completely end pig farming.
As always,
For the animals.
