Leicester Square became the stage for our Skip the Lamb demonstration.

On Saturday 4th April, the busy streets of Leicester Square became the stage for our powerful and thought-provoking Skip the Lamb demonstration, one that challenged tradition, language, and the everyday choices many of us make without a second thought.

Over 75% of the public identify as meat-eaters and for many, Easter is synonymous with enjoying ‘a leg of lamb.’ It’s a phrase so familiar, so softened by tradition, that it rarely invites deeper reflection. Yet behind those words lies a stark reality: eating a lamb’s leg means the killing of a baby animal, often just 3 to 6 months old, and in some cases, as young as 10 weeks.

Provoking the public

Each year, over 13 million sheep and lambs are slaughtered, with Easter marking one of the peak periods of consumption. Our striking street performance, featuring a lamb and a butcher, invited passersby to confront the reality behind their food choices, and extend their empathy from humans to our fellow animals.

The reactions were mixed: curiosity, discomfort, empathy. But that was the point, to interrupt the norm and to make people pause and to ask questions. Hundreds of our flyers were given out to the public, for them to take home and reflect on their choices. The stunt was enhanced by a life size prop lent to us from our friends at PETA UK, which added another visual surprise for the public to see. In addition, our demonstration was covered by The Canary and has been seen by thousands of people online, helping to amplify our message.

Change is possible

Traditions can evolve. Compassion can replace habit. And small choices, like what we put on our plates, can reflect a more conscientious and ethical way of living.

This spring and thereafter, the message is simple: skip the slaughter, skip the lamb.

As always,

For the animals!
