Blanc Pignon Dairy Farm, a Jersey farm operating for the last 80 years, recently announced its closure. While this marks the end of a chapter for the farm, it also presents an opportunity to give the herd a brighter future beyond dairy production.
We have secured sanctuary placements for 51 Jersey cows at Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk. Alongside this, we have launched a nationwide petition urging Blanc Pignon Dairy Farm to send the cows to the sanctuary.
Farm Director Alice Le Cras has suggested that the cows could be taken by other local farms, keeping them within the dairy system. However, such a move would ultimately lead to slaughter. “Dairy cows are also very hard working, and you know, farmers love their animals—you want to have the best facilities,” Le Cras told the BBC.
Wendy Valentine, founder of Hillside Animal Sanctuary, has offered the cows sanctuary:
“Hillside Animal Sanctuary would gladly offer a home to these beautiful Jersey cows where they will be able to live out their natural lives. Please make the compassionate choice.”
This wouldn’t be the first time Hillside has stepped in. In 2017, the sanctuary rescued 73 cows from former farmer Jay Wilde, proving that there is a viable, humane alternative to the dairy industry. We are calling on the farm to show that care truly comes first by allowing the cows to retire at Hillside Animal Sanctuary. Run by Wendy Valentine, Hillside is home to over 750 rescued cows and countless other animals saved from intensive farming.
With the price of milk production going up and so many farmers exiting the dairy industry, it is vital that the cows can leave the industry too. After years of being milked, they deserve a chance to live life on their own terms.
In the dairy industry, ‘spent’ cows are often slaughtered at just five-seven years old, far short of their natural lifespan. At a sanctuary, these cows could live peacefully for up to 25 years, grazing, resting, and simply existing without fear.
We are urging the public to act quickly by signing the petition, demonstrating that there is support for a compassionate solution before it’s too late.
As always,
For the Animals!
