We urgently need your help to stop the planned expansion of a pig slaughterhouse near Bristol.

We urgently need help to stop the planned expansion of a pig slaughterhouse near Bristol. Oakley Green Farm – owned by one of the UK’s biggest pig killers, Pilgrim’s –has applied to expand its facilities. The expansion would mean a far greater capacity to slaughter more pigs – presumably in the pursuit of increased profits. It’s incredibly disheartening that, in this day and age, despite the many ethical, environmental and health reasons not to, proposals like this are still being put forward.

But we know it’s possible to stop this. Earlier this year, thanks to the help of hundreds of people, we successfully helped prevent a proposed mega-farm from going ahead. That shows that when enough of us speak up, we can make a real difference for animals.

Below are some key points you may wish to include in your objection. While we know that animal abuse alone should be reason enough to object, we recommend focusing first on environmental and public health concerns, as these are (sadly) more likely to be taken seriously by planning authorities:

  • Increased HGV traffic from transporting live animals, as well as vehicles removing pig bodies, organs and other waste products
  • Associated noise, air pollution and general disturbance to the local village
  • Increased concerns around the disposal of slaughterhouse by-products
  • Distress caused to local residents from seeing pigs transported in crowded lorries, and from the sounds associated with the slaughter process
  • Increased human health risks linked to higher traffic levels and air pollution
  • A greater risk of zoonotic diseases, such as swine flu, due to more pigs arriving from an increased number of farms
  • Serious animal welfare concerns around the transport, lairage and slaughter of such high numbers of animals — particularly as pigs are likely being killed using CO₂ gas, a method known to cause distress and which the government is already considering moving away from

Anyone can submit an objection, no matter where you live. However, if you’re based in or near Westerleigh, where the facility is, your voice may carry even more weight – making your objection especially important. If you regularly travel near or through this area, that will also add weight, so make sure to include it in your objection.

The deadline to submit objections is 5th January 2026, so it’s vital that we act now.

As always,

For the animals.
