Unimaginable agony exposed at Cranswick’s Red Tractor–assured pig farm, where Percy was cannibalised alive.

Inside Cranswick’s Red Tractor-assured intensive farm, pigs were left to suffer such unimaginable agony that it will shock anyone who sees it. At Somerby Top, young pigs from Northmoor fattening farm – a site also owned by Cranswick where we exposed illegal piglet killing just a few months ago – were imprisoned in desolate concrete pens, on cold, filthy floors surrounded by fear and violence. Many endured extreme, prolonged torture. Just like Percy.

Try to imagine it:

You're confused and in pain. A searing, relentless pain in your belly that you can't make sense of – a heavy swelling that drags from your body with every step, tender and exposed. Percy was suffering from a large hernia hanging from his abdomen, something that should have triggered immediate veterinary attention. But to the workers, he was just ‘stock’ – a number.

The agonising hernia bulged, crawling with flies. It became a focus of attention for Percy's pen mates, who jostled and shoved to sniff it, nudge it, and finally bite it. At first, it was slow, but soon it became frenzied. Deeply frustrated, desperate young pigs – who had already met their own psychological breaking points – fought one another for access.

Percy frequently resorted to lying directly on the hernia to shield it, but the young pigs persistently butted and barged him to expose the wound, knocking him over and trampling on him as he tried to escape. His cries and groans continued as he weakened further – shivering, shaking, and unable to fight back. He lay covered in blood, defenceless and alone. There was nowhere to go.

Eventually, Percy's hernia was cannibalised to the point of complete rupture.

His intestines and internal organs spilled out into the faeces-covered pen. The floor was soon slick with blood, with young pigs following the trail, continuing to eat him alive. At several points, his body convulsed violently as he lost more blood.

Percy was cannibalised alive for over 33 hours. Two workers walked past during that time. They looked at him, did nothing, and left him to die. He took his final breath at 14:18 on the 11th of May.

But even in death, Percy was not given peace. His body was nosed, mounted and vomited on.

Cranswick plc says that "every animal we care for… matters." That they practice "considerate farming." That their farmers are "empowered to do the right thing."

Tell that to Percy.

This is not a one-off horror story. This abuse is not history; it is happening now, repeated a thousand times over in farms across the country. This is UK pig farming – the industry Cranswick bleeds dry for profit, and the abuse Red Tractor calls "assured." Percy's suffering is their shame, and we won't let them get away with it.
