Cielo Cakery in Brighton has just joined our Udderly Kind campaign.

Cielo Cakery in Brighton has just joined our Udderly Kind campaign, becoming the fifth café to make oat milk the default as part of a trial period, and the first to bring this switch to the Brighton coffee scene.

Cielo Cakery's mission is simple: to produce the finest selection of treats, whatever the occasion calls for. Whether you're after your dream wedding cake, a special occasion showstopper, or a box of personalised cupcakes, Cielo Cakery has you covered with a huge range of vegan options sitting right alongside the rest of the menu. With plant-based already baked into how they do business, trialling oat as default was an easy decision for them.

Jodie, the Owner of Cielo Cakery says:

"A lot of people would come in asking for vegan choices for cakes, my mum is also vegan and I wanted to create things she would enjoy. We love to offer an alternative and we have the same amount of vegan options as dairy options. A lot of our customers go for an alternative milk, I personally drink oat milk so I'm quite excited about the trial. We're trialling oat as default because we're based in Brighton and a lot of our customers choose it, and we all love oat milk. Every single one of my staff here would rather go for oat milk anyway."

Oat is becoming the new normal

Five might not sound like a huge number, but this is exactly how change happens. Café by café, city by city, the default is shifting and dairy is losing its grip on the counter.

Cafés are on board with this switch, and so are customers. According to Animal Justice Project's 2025 YouGov survey, 1 in 3 UK consumers (32%) are happy with oat milk as the default, and among Gen Z, almost 1 in 2 (44%) are already supportive. And these numbers are only set to grow as more people learn the reality behind dairy and more cafés default to oat. This is just the beginning. More trials are already in the pipeline, and we're not slowing down until oat is the norm nationwide, not the alternative.

Could your café be next?

Taking part is a simple, low-risk way to explore a new approach and see how it works in your own café environment. To make the switch even easier, our partners at Minor Figures will provide in-store signage, helping you communicate the change to your customers clearly, positively, and without disruption to your day-to-day.We're incredibly excited about this partnership and what it can unlock for cafés up and down the country.

Huge thanks to Cielo Cakery for stepping up, and to Minor Figures for backing this campaign every step of the way. Want your café to be next? Know one that should be? Get in touch, we'd love to talk. Email us directly at sean@animaljusticeproject.com.
