After being suspended from British Lion following our headline investigation last year, Sunny Farm, run by Bird Bros, has been reinstated by the accreditation scheme.
We uncovered death, despair and decay at this Bedfordshire farm in our undercover investigation, which featured sick and injured birds, farm worker abuse and dead hens left to decompose in cages.
Lidl and British Lion suspended the farm pending their own investigations.
Since our investigation was released last August, Bird Bros has reportedly spent £250,000 on “extensive improvements” to “infrastructure, recruitment and staff upskilling”, and a spokesperson confirmed in a news article that it was as a direct result of our investigation.
Amongst the changes, Bird Bros have also announced that they are bringing back a previous director and have committed to “having independent auditors undertake regular unscheduled spot checks”. A Freedom of Information request carried out by Animal Justice Project last year revealed that the farm had only had one spot check in the year leading up to our investigation.
Over 450,000 hens are still trapped inside cages right now at this Bird Bros ‘mega-farm’. No welfare improvements or accreditation are ever going to improve lives for any hen who is being exploited for their eggs. The only way that we can protect these hens is by ditching eggs and choosing vegan. Anything less is a violation of their rights.
Part three of Rotten, our three-part investigation series exposing the Foul Truth about the UK egg industry, will be launching soon. Make sure you're the first to know by signing up to our newsletter via the 'Sign up' button on the top right of our home page.
